Europe braces for economic instability from iran conflict

Nuova instabilità economica in vista

EU/ENG - On Saturday, February 28, shortly after 9:40 a.m., the United States and Israel militarily attacked Iran, sparking a new phase of tension in the Middle East. Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei and his defense minister were killed by a ballistic missile at their location.

A varied but convergent reaction erupted in Europe. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the developments as "very worrying," reaffirming her commitment to safeguarding regional stability, calling for de-escalation, and urging "all parties" to exercise maximum restraint.

Economic Impact

The attack on Iran has caused significant volatility in international oil markets. Oil tankers are stationary and careful not to venture into the Strait of Hormuz, many of which are headed for China. The crisis thus penalizes Beijing, the primary buyer of Iranian oil, which is essential for the rapid development of China's production system.

The geoeconomic rivalry between the United States and China is also reflected in this war, in which a theocratic regime close to Moscow and Beijing is being weakened by Washington. (Below is a graph: US Retail Gasoline Prices Were Climbing Prior to Attacks. Source: Bloomberg)
