The European institutions celebrated International Women's Day 2026

EU/ENG - On the second Sunday of March 2026, the European institutions, with their highest representatives, emphasized that March 8, International Women's Day, is a moment of reflection and mobilization for gender equality and the recognition of women's economic, political, and social rights.
On Sunday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized on social media: "I pay tribute to the girls and women around the world who continue to fight oppression with tireless strength, with unwavering courage. This strength and courage live in each of us. The strength is within us."
The statement released on March 8 by European Council President Antonio Costa is also very significant: "Equality benefits everyone. The EU is committed to gender equality today and every day."
Representing all MEPs, European Parliament President Metsola declared: "To those struggling or still forced to live in fear: keep moving forward, you are unstoppable. Today and every day, we honor those who came before us, while smoothing the path for those who come after."

The women leaders of the European Central Bank and the European Investment Bank also celebrated the day and its significance. Christine Lagarde gave an important interview to a Spanish periodical, while Nadia Calvino emphasized that "women are powerful drivers of change."

The most prominent women in European institutions today do not share a single worldview, a single affiliation, or a single idea of Europe. But they do share one fact: they are central to the continent's future. This, perhaps, is the clearest sign of how far March 8th has come.
