Eurogroup: solid economy but real risks to growth prospects

EU/ENG - In a letter addressed to EU heads of state and government ahead of the Euro Summit on March 19 and 20, Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakakis emphasized the persistence of risks to the stability of the European economy: "The fundamentals of the euro area economy remain solid." However, Pierrakakis warned, "recent developments in the Middle East have already led to unprecedented volatility in energy markets, creating significant risks to the outlook" for growth and economic performance.
The call for leaders is therefore to act to defend the eurozone's economic growth, as already emphasized in recent weeks by European Council President Antonio Costa and European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde. The stability of the single currency in the new environment is crucial for Pierrakakis: "The ongoing changes in the international monetary and financial landscape, growing geopolitical competition, and trade tensions underscore the fact that the euro's international role cannot be taken for granted," he warned. The EU currency must therefore be redistributed, making it strong, safe, and reliable.
This requires a process of reform, which the Eurogroup President calls for again. Because, he writes, "in addition to these short-term risks, the well-known structural challenges, including weak productivity growth, an aging population, and rising fiscal pressures, continue to weigh on Europe's growth potential." European competitiveness therefore depends on a dynamic consolidation of its foundations.
"In an increasingly uncertain global environment, our commitment to sound policies and deeper economic integration remains essential," is the conclusion the Eurogroup President draws from the current situation. This is a call to complete the savings and investment union project.
