The ECB warns of a significant impact of the war in the Middle East

EU/ENG - In its economic bulletin, the European Central Bank released its forecasts for the impact of the war in Iran on European growth, confirming fears already expressed by the European Commission, which forecast a 0.4 percent reduction in growth. At the end of 2026, according to Frankfurt, the European Union's GDP will grow in real terms by only 0.9 percent in 2026, 1.3 percent in 2027, and 1.4 percent in 2028. The projections for 2026 are affected by "disruptions in commodity markets and are weighing on real incomes and confidence," with GDP growth revised downward by 0.3 percentage points for 2026 and 0.1 for 2027.

And inflation, driven by energy prices, is expected to rise to 3.1 percent in the second quarter of 2026, followed by a decline to 2.8 percent in the third quarter.

The problems arising from the conflict will also inevitably impact the euro area's public debt-to-GDP ratio, rising by a full 2 percentage points, from 87.5 to 89.5 percent in the three-year period 2025-2028. In its bulletin, the ECB advises governments to “prioritize the sustainability of public finances, strategic investments, and growth-enhancing structural reforms, while fully exploiting the potential of the single market remains essential.”
