EU/FRA - « L’Europe a plus que jamais besoin de retrouver l’esprit de Jacques Delors : l’audace de la vision alliée au pragmatisme du constructeur. » C’est par ces mots qu’Enrico Letta, président de l’Institut Jacques Delors, a ouvert une conférence commémorative le 5 février 2025 au cœur du quartier européen de Bruxelles, à l’occasion du centenaire de la naissance de l’ancien président de la Commission.
Dans son intervention, intitulée « L’Europe comme chantier permanent : l’actualité de la méthode Delors », Letta a dressé ce qu’il a nommé la « sainte trinité » de la méthode delorsienne : la vision stratégique, l’art de la médiation concrète et la patience du bâtisseur. « Delors ne s, a souligné Letta. Avec l’Acte unique et Maastricht, il a imaginé une nouvelle architecture continentale. Aujourd’hui, il faut la même clarté d’intention. »
Un accent particulier a été mis sur la capacité de Delors à traduire de grands idéaux en compromis institutionnels tangociations techniques, sachant que c’est là que l’Europe se construit, a observé Letta. Sa relation avec les commissaires britanniques est une leçon plus que jamais actuelle : on peut travailler avec ceux qui pensent différemment si l’on partage un objectif commun. »
Letta a ensuite appliqué ces réflexions aux priorités actuelles de l’UE, montrant comment l’agenda delorsien reste en grande partie inachevé. De l’achèvement du marché unique à l’ère du numérique et du vert, à la construction d’une véritable autonomie stratégique, en passant par le renforcement du pilier social : « La leçon de Delors est que le marché et la monnaie, sans une attention à la dimension sociale, perdent leur légitimité. »
En conclusion, Letta a lancé un appel aux dirigeants actuels : « Delors nous apprend que le courage politique ne consiste pas à faire des annonces, mais à construire des institutions durables. Son héritageibles. « Il ne dédaignait pas les nég n’est pas un musée, mais un manuel d’usage. À une époque où les leaders naviguent à vue, sa figure nous rappelle que l’Europe a besoin d’architectes, pas de commentateurs. »
L’intervention a ainsi dressé le portrait d’un Delors étonnamment actuel : non pas le rêveur nostalgique souvent dépeint, mais le prototype d’un leader européen efficace, capable d’allier l’étoile polaire d’une idée à l’art patient du possible. Une leçon que, selon le président de l’Institut qui porte son nom, l’Europe ne peut se permettre d’oublier.
EU/ENG - “Europe needs, more than ever, to rediscover the spirit of Jacques Delors: the audacity of vision combined with the pragmatism of the builder.” It was with these words that Enrico Letta, President of the Jacques Delors Institute, opened a commemorative conference on February 5, 2025, in the heart of Brussels’ European Quarter, marking the centenary of the birth of the former Commission President.
In his address, entitled “Europe as a Permanent Building Site: The Modern Relevance of the Delors Method,” Letta outlined what he termed the “holy trinity” of the Delorsian method: strategic vision, the art of concrete mediation, and the patience of the builder. “Delors did not simply react to crises; he anticipated them,” Letta emphasized. “With the Single European Act and the Maastricht Treaty, he envisioned a new continental architecture. Today, we require that same clarity of intent.”
Particular emphasis was placed on Delors’ ability to translate grand ideals into tangible institutional compromises. “He did not disdain technical negotiations, knowing that this is precisely where Europe is forged,” Letta observed. “His relationship with the British Commissioners offers a lesson that is more relevant today than ever: it is possible to work with those who think differently, provided there is a shared objective.”
Letta then applied these reflections to the current priorities of the European Union, demonstrating how the Delorsian agenda remains largely unfinished. From the completion of the Single Market in the digital and green era, to the construction of a genuine strategic autonomy, and the reinforcement of the social pillar: “The lesson of Delors is that the market and the currency lose their legitimacy if they lack attention to the social dimension.”
In conclusion, Letta issued a call to action to current leaders: “Delors teaches us that political courage does not consist of making announcements, but of building enduring institutions. His legacy is not a museum, but a user manual. At a time when leaders are navigating blindly, his figure reminds us that Europe needs architects, not commentators.”
The intervention thus drew the portrait of a surprisingly contemporary Delors: not the nostalgic dreamer so often depicted, but the prototype of an effective European leader, capable of aligning the guiding star of an idea with the patient art of the possible. A lesson that, according to the president of the Institute that bears his name, Europe cannot afford to forget.
EU/ITA - «Oggi più che mai, l’Europa ha bisogno di ritrovare lo spirito di Jacques Delors: l’audacia della visione unita al pragmatismo del costruttore». È con queste parole che Enrico Letta, presidente dell’Istituto Jacques Delors, ha aperto la conferenza commemorativa del 5 febbraio 2025 nel cuore del quartiere europeo di Bruxelles, in occasione del centenario della nascita dell’ex presidente della Commissione.
Nel suo intervento, intitolato «L’Europa come cantiere permanente: l'attualità del metodo Delors», Letta ha delineato quella che ha battezzato la «santa trinità» del modello delorsiano: visione strategica, arte della mediazione concreta e pazienza del costruttore. «Delors non si limitava a reagire alle crisi, le anticipava», ha sottolineato Letta. «Con l’Atto Unico e il Trattato di Maastricht ha saputo immaginare una nuova architettura continentale. Oggi serve la stessa chiarezza d'intenti».
Un accento particolare è stato posto sulla capacità di Delors di tradurre i grandi ideali in compromessi istituzionali tangibili. «Non disdegnava i negoziati tecnici, ben sapendo che è proprio lì che si forgia l’Europa», ha osservato Letta. «Il suo rapporto con i commissari britannici è una lezione più che mai attuale: si può lavorare con chi la pensa diversamente, purché si condivida un obiettivo comune».
Letta ha poi calato queste riflessioni sulle priorità odierne dell’UE, mostrando come l’agenda di Delors rimanga in gran parte incompiuta. Dal completamento del mercato unico nell’era digitale e green, alla costruzione di una vera autonomia strategica, fino al rafforzamento del pilier sociale: «La lezione di Delors è che il mercato e la moneta, senza un’attenzione speculare alla dimensione sociale, perdono la loro stessa legittimità».
In conclusione, Letta ha lanciato un forte appello alla classe dirigente attuale: «Delors ci insegna che il coraggio politico non si misura con gli annunci, ma con la capacità di edificare istituzioni durature. La sua eredità non è un museo, è un manuale d'istruzioni. In un’epoca in cui i leader navigano a vista, la sua figura ci ricorda che l’Europa ha bisogno di architetti, non di commentatori».
L’intervento ha così restituito il ritratto di un Delors straordinariamente contemporaneo: non il sognatore nostalgico spesso dipinto dalla retorica, ma il prototipo di un leader europeo efficace, capace di legare la stella polare di un’idea all’arte paziente del possibile. Una lezione che, secondo il presidente dell’Istituto che ne porta il nome, l’Europa non può assolutamente permettersi di dimenticare.
