EU ready to respond to Trump's tariffs

EU/EN : US President Trump spoke live on TV on Thursday, March 27, to announce 25% tariffs on imported cars. The increases should come into effect on April 2 and, thanks to them, Trump explained, the US will collect "between 600 million and a trillion dollars in two years". According to Trump, "it is the beginning of the liberation of America", adding: "If companies produce cars in the United States, there will be no tariffs". The White House tenant explained that the increased tariffs will encourage car manufacturers to invest in the United States: "They are already looking for sites". Uncertainty about the extension of the tariffs to spare parts for cars. Trump simply said: "These tariffs will be in addition to the existing ones already in place". Trump's post on Truth Social also caused a stir: "If the European Union works with Canada to economically harm the United States, large-scale tariffs will be imposed, far higher than those currently envisaged, to protect the best friend both these countries have ever had."

The EU: "Ready to react firmly"

The response to Trump's announcement was entrusted to the spokesperson for the European Commission for Trade, Olof Gill, in the daily briefing with the press. Gill said: “The question is not whether we were surprised or not. The question is whether we are prepared or not. And the answer is always yes: we are prepared to safeguard our economic interests and, if necessary, we will provide a firm, proportionate, robust, well-calibrated and timely response to any unjust and counterproductive measures by the United States,” adding: “I want to underline once again that our priority is to find a negotiated solution, a solution that works for both sides, for the EU and the United States, a solution that strengthens our trade and economic relationship, which is, regardless, the most valuable and important in the world. We want to build that relationship, not destroy it, and we believe that the measures announced by the United States are going in completely the wrong direction.” The spokesperson further clarified that the European Union is "talking to global allies and partners around the world about the impact" of US tariffs on the EU, with the Commission remaining convinced that US measures will have a damaging impact, not only on the EU and the US, but on the global economy. And Gill significantly concluded: "The final list of products on which we will propose our Member States to take countermeasures will be well selected to create the maximum impact on the US and minimize the impact on our European economy."
