Berlin, Paris and Rome push for military protection of merchant ships in the Red Sea

EU/EN - The Foreign Affairs Council on Monday, January 22, adopted a document signed by Germany, France and Italy that asked all member countries of the European Union to jointly guarantee security in the Red Sea. According to the three European governments, indiscriminate attacks on merchant ships in transit, not least European ones or those headed to EU ports, by the hostile actions of the Yemeni Houthis, in the form of missile launches and piracy, must be repelled, even militarily. Armed by Iran, the Houthi militiamen claim that they are being discriminated against in Yemen by the government and that they must defend the rights of the Shiites in the particularly poor northern region, drawing attention to their cause even with sensational piracy attacks aimed at making their cause known.

The instruments with which the three Foreign Ministers have indicated to act are military missions, namely the already existing Emasoh/Agenor, in the Strait of Hormuz and the new Aspides, in military defense of merchant ships in the Red Sea. The objective is to get the Aspides mission approved for the Council on 19 February.

The dangers on maritime trade routes to Europe and the repercussions on European trade are convincing the EU to launch one of the most important joint military operations in its history.
