Gentiloni: the success of InvestEU encourages further investments in strategic European industries

EU/EN - The InvestEU programme is a success story for the European Union. With these words of praise, European Commissioner Gentiloni opened his speech on Tuesday 23 January at a conference on InvestEu in Brussels.

The programme will end in 2027 but "the numbers speak for themselves - he underlined -: 90% of the 26 billion euro guarantee provided by the EU for InvestEU has already been used and over 70% has already been approved by the Investment Committee." Furthermore, InvestEU can be made even more effective by simplifying the cooperative framework in the name of agile internal flexibility that "can help us adapt more quickly to changing political priorities".

Gentiloni then focused on the necessary coordination between institutions, community investment banks and economic actors in order to increase the mobilization of investments in strategic industries, security and the security sector. defense as well as in the reconstruction of Ukraine. “The reflection on how to finance these common European priorities - he stressed - within the EU multiannual budget must start now”, also by providing for another pan-European program based on a budget guarantee to mobilize private investments in strategic areas.

To be able to do this in practice, according to Gentiloni, the EU can capitalize on the valuable experience of the EIB, national promotional banks and other international financial institutions involved in the same way as the virtuous implementation of InvestEu.
