Europe Vows to Respond to Trump’s Tariffs

UE/EN - On Monday, February 10, the Trump administration significantly increased tariffs on steel and aluminum imports into the United States “without exceptions or exemptions.” The U.S. tariff rate on steel and aluminum will increase from 10% to 25% starting March 4, with the elimination of quota agreements and thousands of product-specific tariff exclusions.

The European Commission’s official regret was not long in coming. President Von der Leyen, although absent from the parliamentary plenary session in Strasbourg, issued a statement in which she promised that “unjustified duties on the EU will not go unanswered,” announcing “firm and proportionate countermeasures.” Von der Leyen found herself side by side with the parliamentarians of the Popular Party, the Socialists, the Liberals and the Greens, the main groups that refer to the so-called ‘Ursula majority’.

The President of the European Central Bank, Lagarde, inevitably also spoke out on the tariffs. In front of the plenary session of the European Parliament, Lagarde feared a phase of uncertainty in the inflation data, due to frictions in international trade.
